Travel with us through time

1991 to 1994

At the beginning of 1991, Walter Schmid and Herbert Würtinger decided to enter the field of cycling tours. After numerous discussions, the ‘cycling tours’ division was founded in the same year, laying the foundation for today's company.

Just one year later, the first Eurobike catalogue was published, featuring the Ten Lakes Tour in the Salzkammergut as the first own tour. In 1993, Eurofun Touristik was founded, and from then on, all activities in the field of cycling tours were bundled under the brand name ‘Eurobike’.

1995 to 2000

In 1995, the company moved to Obertrum am See. An abandoned farm became the new company location, as it offered sufficient space for the rental bikes in addition to office space.

At the same time, the range of trips on offer was continuously expanded. Eurobike designed new cycle tours such as Bolzano – Venice, Mallorca – the Grand Tour, the Tuscany Tour and the Munich Lakes Tour. These trips are still classics in the Eurobike programme today.

The entrepreneurs recognised early on the great potential of Italy as an attractive destination for cycling holidays and thus took on a pioneering role in cycle tourism.

2001 to 2005

In 2002, the company headquarters in Obertrum am See were expanded. In addition to a spacious bicycle storage area, the extension created additional space for offices and workplaces. The existing premises were extensively renovated. The move to the newly designed offices took place in August 2003, and by the end of the year, the original part of the building had also been completely modernised.

In 2004, hiking tours were presented in a separate catalogue for the first time under the brand name ‘Eurohike’. This laid the foundation for another branch of the company that is now very successful. The destinations around Königssee, Zugspitze and Salzkammergut are still among the classics in the Eurohike range today.

2006 to 2010

In 2006, selected active holidays were offered for the first time in a separate catalogue under the brand name ‘Euroaktiv’. These included family-friendly adventure holidays, horse riding holidays and family holidays in the hiking and cycling sector.

Another trend emerged: cycling and boat trips were becoming increasingly popular. As a result, a separate catalogue for bike and boat trips was published for the first time in 2010.

In late autumn of the same year, the ground-breaking ceremony for the next expansion of the company's premises took place. Additional office space and storage areas were created. At the same time, Verena Sonnenberg took over the management of Eurohike Walking Holidays.

2011 to 2015

In 2011, a catalogue entitled ‘So schön ist Deutschland’ (Germany is so beautiful) was published for the first time, presenting exclusively cycling tours within Germany. In the course of the season, the company also moved into its newly designed office premises.

In 2012, Eurobike celebrated its 20th anniversary. Employees and long-standing partners honoured this special occasion with a big celebration. The Eurohike website was relaunched at the start of the 2014 hiking season. The new hiking catalogue was over 100 pages long for the first time, reflecting the growing demand for active holidays. In the same year, the management team at Eurofun Touristik was expanded: Thomas Schmid, Walter Schmid's nephew, joined the management team and has been supporting the company's founders ever since.

2016 to 2019

In 2016, the organisational structure of the Eurofun Group was revised and operational activities were separated more clearly. The aim was to create structural clarity and further strengthen the focus on service and personalised guest care. Thomas Schmid and Verena Sonnenberg took over the management of Eurofun Touristik.

Following the relaunch of the Eurobike and Eurohike websites in 2017, the online presence was given a modern design. Just two years later, the first dedicated catalogue for charm trips was published, which were becoming increasingly popular with cycling and hiking guests.

2020 til today

The years 2020 and 2021 presented the travel industry worldwide with extraordinary challenges. COVID-19 fundamentally changed international tourism. Despite all the restrictions, Eurofun Touristik was able to run safe cycling and hiking seasons, albeit with reduced guest numbers and a limited range of tours on offer. At the same time, the family-oriented offerings of the Euroaktiv brand were integrated into the two core brands Eurohike and Eurobike.

2022 was marked by a special anniversary: 30 years of Eurobike – 30 years of cycling holidays throughout Europe. This year marked the company's 30th anniversary.

In 2024, the 20th anniversary of the Eurohike hiking brand will also be celebrated – a milestone that fills the company with pride and underlines the successful continuation of its journey through Europe.

Some highlights in the history of Eurofun Touristik

1992: First Catalogue

The publication of the first Eurobike catalogue marks the start of a successful company development. In the same year, the Ten Lakes Tour in the Salzkammergut region becomes the first self-guided tour – a classic that remains hugely popular to this day.

1995: Relocation to Obertrum

As the number of guests grew, so did the demands on the company's infrastructure. Additional space for offices and rental bikes was needed, so the company founders searched for a suitable location and found it in Obertrum. Since then, a converted farmhouse has served as Eurobike's headquarters.

2004: Founding of Eurohike

The founding of Eurohike marks the creation of a new business division specialising in hiking tours in Europe. Today, tours around Königssee, Zugspitze and Salzkammergut are among the most popular classics.

2010: Bike & Boat

Relaxing bike rides along the most beautiful rivers during the day and enjoying the passing landscape from a boat in the evening: cycling and boat trips are becoming increasingly popular. To meet this demand, the first dedicated bike & boat catalogue was published in 2010.

2016: Inauguration of our new office

Following renovations in previous years, a spacious new office was created in 2016. The open-plan office, overlooking the lush greenery, Buchberg, and surrounding forests, became the Eurohike office at that time and is now occupied by our marketing and sales team.
